Chasteberry Chasteberry
(Vitex agnus-castus)

Menstrual disorders viz. amenorrhea, endometriosis, premenstrual syndrome; menopause; corpus luteum insufficiency; hyperprolactinemia and insufficient lactation; acne vulgaris. The herb is claimed to have anti-inflammatory, antiandrogenic, progesterone-like and antimicrobial effects.

Acne Vulgaris: Amann, 1975
Corpus Luteum insufficiency: Milewicz, 1993; Sliutz, 1993
Menopause: Newall, 1996
Menstrual disorders: Amann, 1979
Standardized: 0.5% standardized extract containing Aucubin 0.2mg  

1 capsule with water daily

Whole Herb: (Berry powder) 500mg       

1 capsule with water 3 x daily

Pharmacology:

Chasteberry has been recommended for a variety of female complaints related to imbalances in female hormones. It has been noted to possess significant effect on pituitary function, has been demonstrated to have progesterone-like effects and may stimulate luteinizing hormone and inhibit follicle-stimulating hormone. Recently isolated flavonoids exhibit antineoplastic activity.

Theoretical Cautions and Contraindications:

Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation, due to case reports of uterine stimulation and emmenagogue effects. Chasteberry may interact with medications that increase dopaminergic activity (metoclopramide, levodopa) or antipsychotic agents. Use with caution in individuals receiving hormonal therapy. May lead to the formation of rashes.

Theoretical Interactions:

Dopamine antagonists such as metoclopramide and antipsychotics. Hormonal replacement therapy, oral contraceptives.
